04 MaySimple Email Marketing Strategies for Beginners

Email marketing is probably one of the most cost effective channels that you will ever use in your marketing armoury. This is especially true if you are a small business owner.

Emails are quick and easy to create and send. The best part is the response is fairly instant with most of your responses arriving on the first day with a few stragglers over the course of the week.

This means you can optimize, test and improve your email marketing efforts fairly quickly.

If you are new to email marketing, here are some excellent strategies for you to implement in your emails for maximum conversion and response.

1. Write a strong subject / headline

Inboxes are full of spam mail, give your email a strong headline that will arouse curiosity and compel the recipient to open and read your email. If copywriting isn’t your strongest skill set then read up on the subject (I recommend Bob Bly, you probably can’t afford to hire him, but read his books and visit his website).

Remember you are trying to right a strong headline that gives the recipient reason to open the email which is only the first step in the conversion process.

2. Write great copy for your content

So here we are at the next step in your conversion process, at this point you have managed to get the recipient to open your email, now with your copy your challenge here is encourage the recipient to find out more about your offer, product service or whatever.

You are not trying to sell them here, that’s the heavy lifting part of the conversion process, you need to leave that job to you’re sales letter, landing page or website to do that.

Try and write 2-4 short paragraphs that are compelling and arouse the recipients curiosity to find out more. Try offering an ‘incentive’ such as a pdf download of a report, free advice or tips so that they have a strong reason to take the next step.

3. Craft Your URL link

There are two important considerations here for the URL link you will use in your email. First is about placement, aim to place your link at the top, middle and bottom of your email to give your readers every opportunity to take the next step.

Second, craft your url link  carefully, don’t just say click here, that tells nothing about why the reader should click the link or what’s in it for them. Ensure your link text is compelling and arouses curiosity eg Yes, I want to change my life for good’ or ‘tell me more about how I can change my life’ etc etc.

4. Create a template and stick to it

To maintain the strength and consistency of your email communications you should create an email template and try not to change it for a while. Before using your template remember to test it in as many different browsers and email accounts such as yahoo, hotmail as possible.

Email marketing is cheap to undertake and quick to test and improve. Implement these four simple strategies in your email campaigns and you’ll probably be doing better than most so called, professional email marketers.
